Additionally, attendees will hear from current ONU students who also participate in outreach and have assisted me in demonstrating some of these activities. The exercises do not require a computer, use inexpensive, everyday materials, and are geared towards introducing third through eighth-grade students to a variety of CS concepts, including (1) binary numbers, (2) Caesar Cipher, (3) Book Cipher, (4) algorithm writing, (5) message transmission, (6) computer networking/topology, and (7) computer security. Each activity is paired with an inspiring woman from computer science and recommended books for further reading [9]. |

In this workshop, we focus on explaining the how, what, and why of presenting research posters. We outline the different components of a research poster and provide examples. We plan to end the workshop with a group activity where participants can critique provided posters to help understand how to develop better posters. The goal of the workshop is to encourage students to share and publicize their work in hopes of increasing participation at conferences like OCWIC.

Internet of things (IoT) allows people and things to be connected anytime, anywhere with anything. With the advent of better wireless technology and an increase in smartphone usage, a new mode of data collection (a.k.a. mobile IoT) has emerged.
Nowadays, smartphones are equipped with different types of sensors. As a result, people can easily participate in the sensing of their surroundings. Mobile IoT has several practical applications: air quality monitoring, traffic monitoring, reporting from disaster situations, and environment monitoring. These applications are usually open to the public and receive sensor data from multiple participants, which influences the reduction of data sparsity at lower costs in comparison with traditional sensor networks. However, IoT sensor data is error-prone due to a number of reasons: sensors may be deployed in hazardous environments, may deplete their energy resources, have mechanical faults, or maybe become the targets of malicious attacks by adversaries. Hence, it is crucial to predict those missing or imprecise data values from the correlated data streams. In this talk, I will present my research that aims at developing real-time analysis models, best suitable for mobile environments for enhancing data accuracy and integrity. Moreover, I will discuss different real-life applications of IoT.

The performance of machine learning (ML) methods, including deep learning, for classification and regression tasks applied to tabular datasets is sensitive to hyperparameters values. Tuning these hyperparameters plays an integral part in improving the prediction accuracy of a machine learning algorithm as well as the model selection. Manually searching for the best configuration is a tedious task and many AutoML (Automated Machine Learning) frameworks have been proposed recently to help practitioners solve this problem. Hyperparameters are defined as the values or configurations used to control the behavior of the algorithm while building the model. Hyperparameter optimization is the guided process of finding the best combination of hyperparameters that delivers the best performance on the data and task at hand in a reasonable amount of time. In this work, we evaluate multiple AutoML hyperparameter optimization frameworks on several tabular datasets to identify the best framework among them for tabular data.

A common point of contact between biology and computer science uses machine learning (ML) and computer vision to classify species. We focus on understanding Mullerian mimicry in Heliconius butterflies and what aspects of phenotypes make pairs of co-mimic butterflies look similar to predators. To answer this question, we use Machine Learning approaches to analyze images of butterflies to assess similarities and differences among mimic pairs. Specifically, we use a convolutional neural network that uses triplet loss to create a latent embedding space, with different variations of the triplet chosen across species and co-mimic pairs. Pairwise comparisons across subspecies show that traditionally hypothesized co-mimics are significantly closer to each other in the embedding than are other subspecies pairs, indicating that there is indeed detectable information on the similarity of the co-mimics. This shows that we can discover and characterize differences that distinguish one subspecies from another. The next step is identifying the features that make the co-mimics look similar to predators.

This presentation will discuss findings previously presented as a poster at ACM SenSys 2022. By deploying IoT Air Quality sensors, we can provide real-time and fine-grained air quality data. We share our findings from testing in a controlled lab environment, deploying in an urban environment, and an enclosure for future deployments. For locations less than 4 miles apart, there is a significant difference in air quality, supporting the need for fine-grained air quality sensing to provide communities with more accurate air quality data.

This allows voters to rank their preferences, meaning they can vote for several candidates, in rank order, whom they support. This also allows voters to include their true first-choice candidate without feeling like they might be “wasting” their vote on an unpopular candidate. However, in social choice theory, the paradoxical result of Arrow’s Impossibility Lemma states that given three reasonable constraints, there is no possible algorithm to compile voter preferences into a single social choice in a ranked order voting system. This short talk will discuss Arrow’s Impossibility result and the surprising connections between it, combinatorial topology, and distributed algorithms. This work is based on recent results in the field of distributed computing that use topology to re-frame complicated algebraic proofs into more intuitive solutions. |

The game has achieved almost cult-like status, but this does not exclude the game from flaws concerning the lack of representation and other DEI issues. This project will focus on one vein of DEI – the representation and voices of women on the Oregon Trail. This focus was selected as it would be of particular interest to our current students, one of the faculty members on the project, and the female student on the project. As stated, the current short-term goal is to focus on the voice of women in the Oregon Trail experience.

Land-use policies driven by precise, real-time, and holistic maps can improve food security, mitigate the effects of climate change, and support resilient ecosystems. My research focuses on building innovative, new software applications to improve land-use policies using autonomous, unmanned aerial vehicles (AUAVs), called software-defined cartography (SDC). AUAVs use software to decide where to fly, when to collect data, and when to end a mission without humans in the loop, enabling them to map vast areas quickly and affordably. I am currently working on building SDC applications for use-cases in digital agriculture, resilient forestry, and animal ecology. I plan to use this talk to present on this exciting, interdisciplinary area of AUAV and edge computing research. |

The application of chest X-ray imaging for early disease screening is attracting interest from the computer vision and deep learning community. To date, various deep learning models have been applied in X-ray image analysis. However, models perform inconsistently depending on the dataset. In this work, we consider each individual model as a medical doctor. We then propose a doctor consultation-inspired method that fuses multiple models. In particular, we consider both early and late fusion mechanisms for consultation. The early fusion mechanism combines the deep learned features from multiple models, whereas the late fusion method combines the confidence scores of all individual models. Experiments on two X-ray imaging datasets demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method relative to baseline. The experimental results also show that early consultation consistently outperforms the late consultation mechanism in both benchmark datasets. In particular, the early doctor consultation-inspired model outperforms all individual models by a large margin of accuracy in the UIT COVID-19 and chest X-ray datasets, respectively.

Space applications are becoming increasingly prominent, spanning from space exploration to a variety of critical operations on earth. Consequently, in-space navigation and timing are more and more crucial, and world-wide research is on-going with the objective to improve them. With that main objective, Bobcat-1 CubeSat was designed and developed at Ohio University, in the Avionics Engineering Center. The students in the Bobcat-1 CubeSat team worked hands-on to design, build and operate the satellite and the ground-station. In addition, they worked on the mission planning and control, as well as on the data collection, organization, processing, and analysis. Bobcat-1 was launched in October 2020, deployed from the International Space Station in November 2020 and was expected to deorbit after six months. Bobcat-1 deorbited in April 2022, after a 17 month fully operational mission. Good results have been already found; however, the analysis of the data collected by Bobcat-1 is still on-going.
